Santa Austral

Christmas, rewritten for the Southern Hemisphere

2018: Dress for the Climate

In much of the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas arrives with heat, long days and summer clothing. Santa Austral began as a personal character-design exercise around that contrast: what should change when the climate shapes Santa, and what must remain familiar?

The winter uniform became a soft white-trimmed hat, a green floral button-up shirt, cuffed shorts, reindeer-patterned socks and sneakers. The familiar body shape, red and white accents, long white hair and beard, and the gift sack preserve the archetype while the lighter wardrobe places it in a warmer setting.

2019: What If There Were More Than One Santa?

Returning to the idea a year later changed its scale. Instead of refining the same character, the new study asked whether Santa Austral could describe different local Santas delivering gifts across the Southern Hemisphere. Gelso became the second interpretation.

The exploration went further than costume. Face shapes, hair, beard, uniform, the wearable container and the delivery bicycle were developed as parts of the same job. The quantity of gifts affected the carrying system, the vehicle and Gelso’s complete silhouette.

Face and costume studies searched for a new character without losing the shared Santa archetype.

The load became a design constraint, connecting the wearable container, navigation support and cargo bicycle.

The selected direction brings those decisions into one working figure. Gelso’s uniform, carrying system and transport belong to the same delivery routine, while the final scene places that routine in a warmer urban setting.

Across two editions, Santa Austral grows from a costume study into the suggestion of a larger network of local Santas.
